Trading Psychology โ€”
The most dangerous enemy is yourself

โฑ 25 minute readยท๐Ÿง  Essentialยท๐Ÿ”’ Advanced VIP

Studies show that over 70% of retail trading losses don't come from bad analysis or lack of knowledge โ€” they come from psychological mistakes. Traders with winning strategies who lose because they don't follow the rules. Anyone who learns the technique and ignores psychology will never become consistently profitable.

๐Ÿง  The uncomfortable truth

You can have the best strategy in the world, but if you move the stop loss "because it has to bounce eventually," if you double up after a loss to recover, if you skip a signal because "it doesn't convince you" โ€” you'll still lose. Discipline is worth more than analysis.

1. The 6 emotional traps of the trader

๐Ÿ˜ฑ FOMO (Fear of Missing Out)
You enter late on a move because "you don't want to miss the trade." The move has already progressed, the risk is high, the setup isn't valid. Yet you enter anyway.
โœ… The cure for FOMO
Remember: there's always another trade. The market is open 5 days a week. If you missed this setup, another one comes tomorrow. Never chase the price.
๐Ÿ˜ค Revenge Trading
After a stop loss, you immediately open another trade to "recover." Often in the opposite direction, without analysis, with bigger size. It almost always ends worse.
โœ… The cure for Revenge Trading
After a loss: close MT5, take a break of at least 30 minutes. No trades for an hour. Calmly review the losing trade. You'll come back with a clear head.
๐Ÿค‘ Overtrading
You trade too much โ€” too many trades per day, too many mediocre setups, too much exposure. It often comes from boredom or the urge to "do something." It slowly burns the account.
โœ… The cure for Overtrading
Maximum 2-3 trades per day. If you've already hit your daily target, stop. "Doing nothing is doing something" โ€” waiting for a valid setup is a skill.
๐Ÿ˜ฐ Moving the Stop Loss
"I'll move the SL a bit lower, it has to bounce eventually." It's the most expensive phrase in trading. The SL gets moved once, then again, then the loss becomes catastrophic.
โœ… The absolute rule
The Stop Loss is never touched in the direction of the loss. Never. If the market is proving you wrong, your job is to accept the loss and get out. Don't negotiate with the market.
๐Ÿ’ธ Increasing lot size after a win
"I've won 3 trades in a row, I'm on fire โ€” I'll increase my lots." Overconfidence. The next trade has the same probability as the others. Increasing exposure in a moment of euphoria is dangerous.
โœ… Volume consistency
Use always the same lot from the risk table, regardless of your emotional state or recent results. Volume consistency is the foundation of your statistical edge.
๐Ÿ˜– Closing early
The trade is in profit and you see the candle going slightly against you โ€” you hit "Close" to "lock in the gain." TP1 hasn't been reached yet. You're cutting profits short.
โœ… Respect the plan
Don't watch the trade while it's open if it makes you anxious. Set SL and TP on MT5 and let the market run its course. The TP is calculated โ€” trust the analysis.

2. The Trading Journal โ€” The most powerful tool

Professional traders all keep a journal. It's not optional โ€” it's essential. Without recording your trades you can't improve because you don't know what you're doing wrong.

๐Ÿ““ Journal Template โ€” Fill in after every trade
Date and time e.g. Monday June 3, 2025 โ€” 16:30
Setup found e.g. Bullish H4 BOS โ†’ pullback to H1 OB โ†’ M15 Pin Bar
Entry / SL / TP e.g. BUY @ 4062.50 ยท SL: 4055.00 ยท TP1: 4075 ยท TP2: 4090
Result e.g. TP1 hit +$45 / SL hit -$30 / Manual close +$20
Did I follow the plan? e.g. Yes โ€” I waited for the Pin Bar. / No โ€” I entered early without confirmation.
What to learn from this trade e.g. I moved the SL. I won't do it again. I need to trust the original analysis.
๐Ÿ’ก Why the journal works

After 50-100 recorded trades, you'll see clear patterns: under which conditions you profit most, which mistakes you systematically repeat, which setups have the highest win rate for you. Data doesn't lie โ€” emotional memory does.

3. Managing losing streaks (drawdown)

Every trader โ€” even the best in the world โ€” goes through periods of consecutive losses. A drawdown doesn't mean the strategy is wrong. It means you're in the negative tail of the statistical distribution. How you manage it determines whether you survive or not.

โš ๏ธ Losing streak rule

If you lose 3 trades in a row: reduce your volume by 50% for the next 5 trades. If you keep losing, stop for the day. The capital you protect today is the capital you'll use to profit tomorrow.

The 3 causes of a drawdown

  1. Normal statistical variance โ€” even a system with a 60% win rate has periods of 5-10 consecutive losses. It's part of the math.
  2. Changed market conditions โ€” the market has become less suited to your strategy (e.g. extreme ranging when the strategy works in trends). Wait.
  3. Operational mistakes โ€” are you breaking the rules? Open the journal and check your last trades.

4. The 10 rules of the disciplined trader

๐Ÿ“‹ My trading rules โ€” print and keep in front of your monitor
I never enter without a valid setup that respects the H4 structure.
The SL never moves in the direction of the loss. Never.
I don't make more than 3 trades a day. After 2 consecutive losses, I stop.
I never chase the price. If I missed the setup, I wait for the next one.
I don't trade in the 15 minutes before and after high-impact news.
I always use the same lot from the risk table โ€” regardless of the outcome.
I don't close a trade early relative to the TP without a valid technical reason.
After a revenge trade: I stop for the day. Zero exceptions.
I log every trade in the journal within 10 minutes of closing.
Every Sunday evening I review the week: what I did well, what to improve.

5. The professional trader's daily routine

  • Before the London open (08:30 CET): H4 XAUUSD analysis โ€” structure, bias, key zones. 10 minutes max.
  • 09:00 โ€” London open: Watch the price action without entering. Let the market show its intentions.
  • 09:30 โ€” 11:00: Main window for London Open setups. High volatility, good liquidity.
  • 14:00 โ€” 15:30: Pre-NY pause. Avoid opening new trades โ€” the market often ranges.
  • 15:30 โ€” 17:30: New York open + London/NY overlap. Maximum volatility. The most powerful setups of the day.
  • 18:00: If you've hit your daily target, stop. Don't let greed take over.
  • Evening: Update the journal. Prepare the analysis for the next day.
