90% of retail traders look at a single timeframe and wonder why their entries are always imprecise. The answer is simple: the market operates on multiple levels simultaneously. Multi-timeframe (MTF) analysis lets you use higher timeframes to understand where and the lower timeframes to understand when when to enter.
๐ง The MTF principle
The higher timeframe defines the directional bias (where the market wants to go). The intermediate timeframe defines the zone of interest (where to enter). The lower timeframe provides the precise signal for entry. All three need to be aligned.
1. The 3 timeframes on XAU/USD
H4
๐บ๏ธ Context
Defines the dominant trend. Here you identify structure (HH/HL/LH/LL), BOS, CHoCH and the overall bias. Check it every morning before doing anything else.
H1
๐ฏ Zone
Identifies the zones of interest: Order Block, FVG, supply/demand levels. It tells you where price might stop or bounce in the short term.
M15
โก Timing
The precise entry signal. Look for CHoCH, candle patterns (Pin Bar, Engulfing) inside the zone identified on H1. Only enter with confirmation on M15.
2. The top-down process โ Step by step
1
H4 โ What's the dominant trend?
Open the H4 chart of XAUUSD. Look at the last 50-80 candles. Is it making HH+HL (uptrend) or LH+LL (downtrend)? Has there been a recent BOS? Determine the bias: BUY or SELL.
โ If it's not clear โ DON'T trade. Wait for the structure to become clear.
2
H4 โ Where are the key zones?
Identify Order Blocks, FVGs and structural levels on H4. These are the macro zones where price might react. Draw them on the chart as rectangles.
3
H1 โ Is price approaching a zone?
Switch to H1. Is price pulling back toward the H4 zones you identified? Look at the H1 structure: is it consistent with the H4 bias or showing contrary signals?
โ Wait for price to reach the zone โ don't anticipate.
4
H1 โ Is there an Order Block or FVG on H1 in the zone?
Inside the H4 zone, look for confluences on H1: a local OB, an FVG to rebalance, a supply/demand level. The more confluences you have at the same point, the stronger the setup.
5
M15 โ Wait for the confirmation signal
Drop to M15. Wait for price to show a CHoCH in the direction of the bias, or a Pin Bar or Engulfing on the zone. This is your entry signal.
โ Without confirmation on M15, don't enter โ even if everything else looks perfect.
6
Entry, SL and TP
Entry at the M15 confirmation. SL: below the low of the zone (bullish) or above the high (bearish) with a 5-10 pip buffer. TP1: previous H1 swing. TP2: H4 structural swing.
๐ Visual example โ H4 bias BUY โ H1 OB zone โ M15 Pin Bar entry
3. Common mistakes in MTF analysis
โ Mistake 1 โ Timeframe conflict
H4 says SELL, M15 says BUY. Don't enter. When timeframes conflict, the signal is ambiguous. Wait for them to align or look for another setup.
โ Mistake 2 โ Reversing the process
Many traders look at M15 first and then try to "justify" it on H4. The process must always be top-down: H4 โ H1 โ M15. Never the other way around.
โ The strongest signal
H4 in an uptrend โ H1 pullback to OB/FVG โ M15 bullish CHoCH + Pin Bar on the zone = maximum confluence. Three timeframes aligned in the same direction = an extremely high-probability setup.
Summary
โ
H4 = context and bias (where the market wants to go).
โ
H1 = zone of interest (where it might stop to bounce).
โ
M15 = precise entry signal (CHoCH or candle pattern on the zone).
โ
The process is always top-down: never reverse it. If the TFs conflict, wait.
โ
3 aligned TFs = maximum confluence = the most reliable setup.
